The Essence of a Legend

Legend - an extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field.
Of course as everyone has heard by now the great Oscar De La Renta has passed away due to a battle with cancer. When I first saw that he passed I wasn’t surprised at all, a tad bit sadden but the first thing I thought was the fact that I got to witness a living legend. Now I may not have gotten to witness him is prime but I’m very aware on his impact to not only fashion but American society.
His death triggered a 3 hour “thinking session” last night that made me ask myself how do you become a legend?  I mean we all know of them from artist, musicians and politicians but what does it take to be called a legend? As I lay in bed last night on my phone and listening to some music I browsed countless collections of Mr. De La Renta’s and I realized how much of a basic aesthetic he used while designing. His focus was easy and effortless; the staple of elegance and he focused on making woman feel comfortable in their clothing. Oscar once said “I design clothes for women to wear. I am not interested in shock tactics. I just want to make beautiful clothes.” It’s so simple yet complex. I feel like designers today focus on the that “shock tactic”, I get taking a more artistic angle to designing but it’s almost like the “art” aspect is more important than the actually function  of the clothing.  If you look at each of his collections and years of designing’s for Balmain his root aesthetic never changed, which was elegance. Elegance will forever be the core value of his brand, and that’s something that takes a gift, and commitment to ones vision to succeed at it. And that brings me to what makes a legend?

To become “legendary”…a word I feel my generation through around so freely now is something of monumental proportion.  A legend is a person that’s few and far between, who kept true to their vision and wasn’t afraid to try something new and inspired all walks of life. Oscar De La Renta became a legend simply because he made clothing for woman the way HE wanted to. Not according to the trends or shocking and uncomfortable silhouettes by his fellow designers. He decided what his aesthetic would be early on and stuck to it. I think being true to your own aesthetic makes you legendary. You see designers and musicians tweaking their sound and design to “stay current” forgetting the true essence of their individual beauty. Now granted Oscar De La Renta is a pioneer in American Fashion and one of the go to designers for celebrities and first ladies alike but who inspired him to pursue his dreams and do things his own way? Oscar is an example of believing in your vison. After his days of designing for Lanvin and Balenciaga he knew that Ready to Wear was where the money was and he knew how to execute his plan, just simply go with what you know.

So many times my generation will “find their nitch” and want to grow in it but start taking the route of others before them only to find that path may not be for them. And I’m not going to lie, I’ve fell victim to that. Comparing myself to others, trying to do what they did. But it comes a point where you know what you want to convey, how you want to be perceived and how you’re going to execute your plan, and believe me I’m still getting there. So I don’t take Oscar De La Rentas death as a “loss” it’s a historic and legendary story of triumph proving that if you stay true to your aesthetic you too may become legendary.

Rest in Peace to the great Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo July 22, 1932 – October 20, 2014

1914 Affair

Greetings stylish ones! It’s another cool day over here at J Alex Style and I want to put the spotlight on an event here in Baltimore that I think has helped shape our more “cultured” scene here in Baltimore. So if you’re from this city and have an Instagram you’ve seen promos for the 1914 Affair which is on October 25, 2014. Now I’ll be honest I’ve never been to one of these events and I’m intrigued to go this year.
When I think of some events in Baltimore I think of thee most ratchet venues and an overflow of Mango-Ritas and the occasional “twerk off” and there is nothing wrong with some occasional ratchet party but you need a balance. But the events I’ve been frequenting lately haven’t given me that vibe. I think our generation is getting to the point where we’re tired of succumbing to the stereotypes of being ratchet and we’re longing for more substance.  Events like the 1914 Affair and Overly Dressed People (shout out to @larry.luv & @artpusha) are more of a rarity in this city and I like that complex. When is the last time someone in our generation thought it would be cool to get dressed up (like really dressed up) and have a good ass time?
I put together 4 different looks for any woman attending this event varying from super dressy to layed back chic. I also got the chance to pick the brain of the curator of the 1914 Affair- my homie Cheyanne Zadia IG:@bougiegivenchy Check out our mini Q&A below and grab some inspo from one of the looks I styled. Enjoy and see you on the 25th!

1. What inspired you to start the 1914 Affair?
The event was inspired by my peers (the movers, shakers, and curators of Baltimore). The original idea was to simply bring like-minded individuals together for one event to connect and exchange positive vibes. The concept grew into something way bigger after the first event. As creatives we all have a competitive drive. I figured why not turn that competitiveness into something positive (best dressed contest) as well as spotlight artist who have been low-key contributing to the culture in a major way. I like to think of #1914Affair as the war that ended all wars. Although, guest are competing for best dressed the most important thing is that we all connect and build. With so many curators in one room the possibilities of something world changing happening from this one event is what inspires me most.

2. What is YOUR perfect look for this event?
Honestly, I usually have no idea what I'm going to wear until a few days before.... Definitely something Chic with a tomboy feel to it. I'm thinking about a full suit this year but who knows. Lol
3. If you could take anyone as a date to the 1914 Affair who would it be?
Pharrell. Hands down! Mostly because his energy would be perfect for the atmosphere. I'll apologize to my girlfriend in advance. Lol

4. In your wildest dreams where would the 1914 Affair (your brand) be in 5 years?
In 5 years, I'd like to see this event globalized. So far we've connected with artist from New York City. We have artist from OKC reaching out, there's no tell what we'll do next. However, I'd like to see my same peers attending but 10x wealthier... Lol. It would be a blessing to one day hear "I met my business partner at 1914 Affair that one year...”

5. Name 3 "not to do's" for guest coming to the event.
No Athletic Wear
No holding back on introducing yourself to your neighbor (Everyone who attends is worth something to the culture, connect.)
Do not touch the artwork lol... (I couldn't think of a good third one)

feeling gray.

Good morning stylish folks! It’s Monday and we’re back at it! I hope you all had a great weekend and am nice and re-charged for the week. I myself had a relaxing weekend were I spent some time with my grandmother, watched the entire second season of American Horror Story (my new obsession) and worked some overtime at work. Although working overtime may seem like the opposite of relaxing my job is rather easy so it didn’t require much focus. The time I spent with my grandmother was cool. I took some pics of her to post on her dating website she just joined. It was a nice to see a different side of her. I got to see that she wasn’t just my Granny, she was a woman who had desires and dreams and I got a chance to get a glimpse of her as a friend. We talked and laughed and she told me some of the funniest stories.  I’ll appreciate that time forever. American Horror Story though??... Why am I so late?  I started watching the third season last Wednesday and decided I better get caught up and watch the previous seasons. I started with the second season because my co-worker ranted and raved about how intriguing the story was and honey it was nothing short of amazing. From the story line to the costume design it was simply AMAZING. I think Jessica Lange is literally my spirit grandmother and Sarah Paulson is my fairy god mother, their performances were flawless!  Overall I had a great weekend, enjoyed my ME time and now I am back on the grid.

I’m wearing an all gray number. Bombers are the movement this season and staples in my closet. This look is comfortable and clean, very simple.
Bomber Jacket- GAP
Dress- H&M

art galleries and such...

Hello beautiful people! I hope you enjoyed your week and at least accomplished one thing on your to do list. This was a cool week for me; I’ve been working hard and doing tons of research on how to make my blog better and more appealing. This week for the first time I can honestly say I started to see my own greatness. We all have moments were we feel discouraged and aren’t sure if we can make the things happen that we want to. I was going through one of those ruts. I was feeling stuck and not sure what to do to get myself where I need to be, but with my amazing friends and family and just some good ole alone time I got my head straight. I’ve come to realize that no one really has the answers to success. You just have to whole heartily BELIEVE in your vision and stay in you lane, to me that’s the remedy to success. The more time you spend loathing and being a VIP at your own pity party you’re losing golden opportunities to meet amazing people, gain inspiration and work on bettering your craft and yourself. So I choose to focus on my strengths and continue to grow as a woman and human being.

So anyway this post is not so much geared towards my look (although I did look cute) but more so towards my amazing day spent in DC. My boyfriend and I decided to have a small “get-away” for the weekend and stayed in the DC Capitol area. We had dinner in Chinatown at MatchBox which was amazing, try the mini burgers, but our whole motive was to go to some museums. We ended up staying in a hotel literally 5 mins away from all the museums we wanted to visit which was great. We first went to the National Gallery of Art. Now I’ve been to museums but this was like no other. We got to see an original Da Vinci and I can honestly say I have a new appreciation for marble sculptures.
I wore H&M overalls and Henley l/s tee paired with a flannel around my waist and Dolce Vita slip-on’s. I wanted to be cute but defiantly comfortable. I also wore a burgundy bomber jacket but got way too hot to keep it on in the museum.  Hope you got a little bit of inspo! Visit a museum before the year is out; it’s a break from the usual things to do.

"Dress Normal": My thoughts on the Gap's new ad campaign

So of course lately I've been doing my fall shopping and one of my favorite places I've been finding simple comfortable pieces is the Gap. I haven't always shopped at the Gap but for the last couple of months I've found some of my most comfortable jeans, hoodies and sweaters from there, and comfort is a big thing when I buy new pieces. I’ve never shopped at the Gap when I was younger because I had more of an eccentric/hippy style but now that I’m getting older I’ve adapted a more cleaner and chic look to my style and Gap offers cute and affordable pieces for my new wardrobe…plus I always find something super cute and cheap on the sale rack!

If you’ve been in the Gap lately or follow them on social media you might have notice their new ad campaign entitled “Dress Normal”. “Dress Normal”, that’s a very simple and to the point slogan right? When I first saw the slogan I immediately thought “brilliant!” I understood completely what the gap was saying. They weren’t using the word normal in the literal meaning but more so in the definition of being comfortable, at least that’s how I took it. They use other slogans for the campaign such as “Black is a color” and “Dress like no one is watching”. Although these are simple quotes they have a certain tone of controversy that I like. Gap Global CMO Seth Farbman explains the angle of the ad campaign by saying “What I wanted, because this is Gap, was positive anxiety. “When you’re dressing normal, you’re really your truest and most confident and authentic self”.Farbman hit the nail right on the head with his vision for the head slogan because it defiantly raised some eyebrows with ad agencies, bloggers and journalist. I ran across a couple of different blog post and articles about the ad campaign and to say the least I was super surprised by the response and most did not understand where Gap was trying to going with their new campaign.
So out of all the articles and blog post I read there was one blog post from the Huffington Post by Tom Silva entitled “The Gaps strange new strange ad campaign”. The post basically went into how much of a branding mistake the campaign is and how it did not translate well to the consumer. Silva touches on how he may be misconstruing the slogan by saying “Really? I've always associated the word "normal" when used within an imperative statement ("act normal," "be normal") with a 50s era parent hectoring their child to stop listening to the Doors or to stop reading James Baldwin”. In my opinion (like other bloggers and journalist I ran across) Silva took the slogan to literal, not really understanding the core meaning and direction of the campaign, only paying attention to the surface. Farbman elaborates more by saying “We wanted it absolutely to be a provocation -- what does 'Dress Normal' mean to each individual? I think that certainly when it's paired with photography and paired with some of the headlines, people will understand that it's about dressing the way you want to." Of course that’s the way most people were expected to take it and the fact that it was not that easily understood baffles me.
With all that being said how do you view the slogan? Me personally I get it and it didn’t take reading quotes from the CMO, its simple…be comfortable in who you are. When I hear “Dress Normal” I think of wearing your most simplistic pieces and wearing them well. Not having to over accessorize or wear the brightest colors or even follow trends. Now granted all of that could be your norm but most young people in society now are dressing like Rihanna or Kim Kardashian and quite frankly none of us are them. It's ok to be inspired by someone in the public eye but people get the glammer of being a "superstar" to blurred with working an everyday job and having regular hobbies. Now when I say all of this I don't mean that if you work a regular 9-5 you can't dress as stylish and risqué as you want (outside of work  of course) but I feel that people lose their identities trying to wear the latest and keep up with those who are doing more than and defiantly making more money. *MESSEGE* LOL!
Being comfortable in your own in skin is a “style” within itself. This slogan indicates that self –assurance and knowing who you are is the new trend. For example have you ever met someone who you thought had the coolest style, their look just intrigued you. Most of the time those people are the ones simply wearing a white tee shirt, jeans and Chucks but all those pieces are worn with minimal effort. And that’s it right there, not having to overshadow your “real” personality and charaterics. That’s the essence of style; it’s wearing clothes and being comfortable in how you’re wearing it. All and all find your own normal, weather its wearing 6 inch pumps every day or wears dirty chucks just be comfortable and confident within yourself. After that is the only way to “Dress Normal”.

layers to this shit.

Today is a beautiful yet cold day in the neighborhood and honestly I’m enjoying it! I’m so glad its officially feeling like fall and I’m able to break out my boots and jackets. This is the first installment of my fall looks and I’m so excited to share how I layer cute pieces and transition my spring and summer pieces into autumn.
This look was all about dimension and layering. These boots are a mountain wedge from my beloved retailer Zara. As soon as I saw these boots I fell IN LOVE with them. It was something about something about the shape of the boot that had an edge that I didn’t think I would get out of any boots this season. My bomber is from H&M and is super comf , paired with the dress also from H&M and American Apparel cropped sweater. I love the texture of this look, it’s very easy. Hope this gave you some inspo for your fall looks! See you later this week!

Intro to October!

Hello October!!! It’s officially fall and I’m so excited to break out my chunky knits and boots! This month I plan to post some of my favorite fall looks and trends. Each month I want to challenge myself to something different. So this month I’m challenging myself to not shop (well as much) as I usually do. I have a trip to LA planned and the holidays are right around the corner so funds are limited. I’m trying to become more fiscally responsible but geesh is it a struggle?! I thought since I’m no longer working in retail it would be easier not to spend money, nope it’s actually even harder. Now online shopping is my vice. Working on a computer all day I find myself constantly perusing Zara and Googling name necklaces and sunglasses that I have no business buying. This month will be a challenge but growth none the less. Here are my 11 fav items for October which are actually all under $100! Enjoy!
